A career in hospitality management can be just as exciting as it isrewarding. Enrolling in one of the nation’s top hospitality schools can helpyou earn the credentials necessary to qualify your for higher-level positionsin the field. But some schools fail to provide students with the propereducation needed to be successful in such a diverse and changing field. Let’stake a look at what some of the top hospitality schools offer:
Balance: Students can’t exactly learn what it takes to be successfulin the hospitality industry by reading a book. Hospitality jobs center aroundcustomer service, and to effectively learn these skills requires a combinationof coursework and practical work experience. The top hospitality schools willfind the appropriate balance between classroom instruction and real-worldexperience. It’s important to maintain this balance because without coursework, students will miss the big picture behind their work, and without enoughexperience, they aren’t likely to perform well on the job.
Internships: The top hospitality schools will help their studentsfind internships that help them gain work experience while networking withprofessionals in the industry. Many schools have partnerships with local hotelsand restaurants, which will allow students to intern with little previous workexperience.
On-Site Experience: Some schools even utilize their own resources totrain students for the work in the hospitality industry. Many of thetop hospitality schoolsactually own a local facility like a restaurant, where students can work andearn course credit at the same time.
Thorough Education: Most lower-level hospitality jobs do not requirea formal education. Students enrolled in degree programs are often seekinghigher-level opportunities in managerial positions. The top hospitality schoolswill provide students with a background on their desired field, for examplefood service management, but will also teach them the practical skills neededto run a business. Students interested in restaurant management do need tolearn about food and beverage preparation, but to be successful they also needto know about issues like employee relations, inventory management andaccounting.
